If you are looking for a great New Year’s resolution, adding essential oils into your daily routine may just change your life!  At the beginning of 2017 I began making healthier lifestyle choices and chose to implement essential oils and have never looked back since.  

I have noticed the improvement in my immune system and overall health. I realised how easily I would turn to cold and flu tablets which only give you temporary relief, instead of letting my body do its own job!

Listing all the benefits of essential oils would be endless so I have included the best benefits I have found from using essential oils:

Immunity and Illnesses

When trying to live a holistic lifestyle you should opt for natural remedies when you can versus pharmaceutical drugs. It may take some effort but your body will thank you later!  Taking antibiotics for a common cold can make your cold worse and also disrupt your gut health. This is because colds are caused by viruses which do not respond to antibiotics. This in turn can cause an antibiotic resistance. When improving the immune system, you require the obvious factors such as good nutrition, sleep and stress management. Essential oils coincide with stress management as stress weakens the immune system. Using oils can help the recovery of colds and to also prevent them.  

Here are my favourite choices of essential oils for fighting a common cold/flu and some essential oil combinations that are extremely effective! Keep note that essential oils aren’t naturally sweet and can taste very strong! This is the case for me sometimes. You can always add less or more of whichever oil, or simply add your favourite sweetener.

Essential Oil | Benefit & Use

Oregano oil

Extremely potent and powerful agent. It contains antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties which is great to use when the body has been exposed to a virus.  

Add 2 drops under your tongue for relief.  

Eucalyptus oil

A natural expectorant and decongestant. It helps the recovery process for colds and coughs with its anti-viral properties.

Best used with either direct inhalation or steam inhalation.

Tea Tree oil

Aids in enhancing the immune system. It contains anti-microbial and anti-viral properties which all helps to kill microorganisms.

Best used with either direct inhalation or steam inhalation.

Frankincense oil

Aids in enhancing the immune system. It can also act as an expectorant and contains anti-microbial properties.

Use with steam inhalation or 2 drops with a cup of water.

The Flu-Buster Tea:

In hot water, add

  • 2 drops oregano essential oil

  • 2 drops of frankincense essential oil

  • 3 drops lemon essential oil

The Ultimate Headache Relief Blend:

This blend is my holy grail that I take everywhere. I have not had to take any sort of paracetamol in months! Combine all oils and apply to your pressure points. For the best results, apply to both temples and across the forehead. Massage the blend for 30 seconds into the skin.

  • 4 drops of lavender essential oil

  • 4 drops of peppermint essential oil

  • 4 drops of frankincense essential oil

  • 4 drops of eucalyptus essential oil

  • 30mL coconut oil

Anxiety and Stress

It has been debated that anxiety and stress has become an epidemic currently. 2017 was a stressful year for me and caused me to experience a lot of anxiety. Before 2017, I had never really experienced much of these feelings and had no idea how to manage it. It caused me to struggle in my everyday life, not being able to leave the house without having anxiety attacks. Finally, after some help I learnt about how essential oils can help with these issues. The most effective oils that have almost instantly eased feelings of anxiousness or stress for me was bergamot essential oil and frankincense essential oil by direct inhalation or in a diffuser. Another effective method is applying the these oils to your temples and on the inside of your wrists.

D.I.Y Beauty

In addition to using oils for health, my favourite use of essential oils is for beauty purposes.

If you’re someone who enjoys making homemade masks or scrubs, it works out cheaper purchasing essential oils since you only use a small amount of oil in each use! Just make sure you have a carrier oil to dilute the oils – my favourite is fractionated coconut oil.

A hair mask that I use regularly is perfect for thin and damaged hair. Peppermint and rosemary oil is great for stimulating hair growth and can also treat dry scalp. Lavender oil also promotes growth and can prevent hair loss. Start at the ends of your hair and work towards the roots. Massage the blend into your scalp for 2 minutes.  Use this once a week for a minimum of 30 minutes and shampoo twice afterwards.

Stimulating Hair Mask:

  • 2 tbs coconut oil

  • 6 drops of peppermint essential oil

  • 6 drops of rosemary essential oil

  • 6 drops of lavender essential oil

    This recipe is a simple face mask great for brightening and removing oil. Frankincense and Douglas Fir are godsend oils for skin! Douglas Fir can help clarify and cleanse the skin without drying and frankincense oil is great for toning and lifting the skin. Mix all ingredients together and leave on the skin for 10-15 minutes.

Wake Me Up Mask:

  • 2 tbs plain Greek yoghurt

  • 2 tbs Manuka honey

  • 1 drop of frankincense essential oil

  • 1 drop of Douglas Fir essential oil
